Cult-TV Theme Watch: The Mustache

A mustache -- or moustache, depending on your spelling preference -- is facial hair grown above the upper lip.

Mustaches go in and out of fashion, but ones of a bushy nature were especially in vogue during the early 1970s.

Many beloved characters in cult-television history are remembered, in fact, for their stylish ‘staches.

Among such figures is include the most famous mustached TV character of all: Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) from Magnum P.I. (1980 – 1988), who single-handedly made the mustache popular for a whole decade.

In terms of sci-fi, The Starlost (1973) was headlined by a heavily mustached Keir Dullea as the farmer from Cypress Corners, Devon.

Meanwhile, Prentis Hancock’s Paul Morrow cut a dashing figure with his neatly-groomed ‘stache, as the controller of Moonbase Alpha on Year One of Space:1999 (1975-1977).

On Millennium (1996 – 1999), a beloved (and then villainous…) character, Peter Watts (Terry O’Quinn) became known by his trademark pencil mustache. In one episode of the series, we met Watts’ family and all his daughters were mocking that narrow strip of hair he maintains over his upper lip.

And on The Simpsons (1990 - ), Ned Flanders sports an enviable broom mustache.
